Not really. Evil Dead is like the original “horror movie in a cabin”. There have been many since and it’s a classic subgenre of horror. This movie is a remake of the original, so it’s similarities are actually the result of the fact that Cabin in the Woods is using the “cabin movie” horror subgenre to do its parodying.

If Evil Dead 2013 was trying to be Cabin in the Woods it probably would have been a better movie.

Everybody here is hilarious, like they usually are, and always keeps the movie’s energy and pace at a going-speed that never slows up for a second. Good review.

Sure but I make it a point not to approach a movie from the grounds of the movie I wanted. I try to focus on the movie I got and concentrate on the faults of that. After Earth has plenty of faults on its own terms without having to supply them by expecting it to be a different movie.

So in a way, any movie that has faults could certainly have been better than it was. It’s important to isolate and discuss what those faults are, how they are faults, and what could/should have been done to prevent them in a specific textual context. Or you can broaden it out into a larger context but that gets tricky. For example, a lot of reviews focus on Shyamalan’s career and it’s impossible not to at least cite it (as I did). This is tricky because you’re packaging your criticism with a lot of baggage about the guy behind the camera.

The emotional level isn’t the only one. Pines is a movie that has grown in my appreciation since I saw it (and wrote this review) but it is certainly flawed even if it is also moving. You could say the same about a lot of movies or books.

What did you find so closed minded in my review?

That is such a closed minded response to such a beautiful movie. To me, it seemed like you went into the movie with closed off emotions. I went in not knowing anything of the plot and left completely in awe; albeit with the melancholy tinge you did describe
